"Information could be Shared without the owner's permission and lost," Enderle pointed out.

Still, Enderle said, industry leaders such as Volkswagen and Intel Corp. are working on similar technology.

"The challenge Microsoft has when the founder departs is remembering its heart," said analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group in Silicon Valley.
