Finlay and colleagues further explored how changes in the gut bacteria affect the severity of an infection.

"By thinning this mucous [layer], we increased the susceptibility to infection," Finlay said at the meeting.

It was a Cuban, Carlos Finlay, who discovered that mosquitoes carry yellow fever; his work helped Walter Reed fight it.
