European bank shares have fallen by 40% this summer; in the third quarter investors in European subordinated bank debt lost almost 13%.

European shares reversed early losses and Wall Street gained in another low-volume session, helped by a successful Portuguese debt offering that eased risk aversion.

But some lenders appear to have secured a place on them by paying kickbacks in the form of shares, free travel, debt write-offs and phoney fees.
