"This was really exciting because it tells us the animals are more chilled out and don't mount the same stress response," Cryan says.

Now with the easier access to radar data, Cryan says that researchers such as Frick "are just starting to see patterns that are meaningful."

So far, most of the work has focused on how pathogenic bugs influence the brain by releasing toxins or stimulating the immune system, Cryan says.
