And by using digital imaging analysis, he and colleagues are gauging their progress, observing how well the materials perform when splattered with actual blood droplets.

Perhaps this was once a reasonable assumption, but advances in digital imaging and optics have made it easy to duplicate someone's keys from a distance without them even noticing.

"We chose Adobe Photoshop as our digital imaging tool because the software is so powerful and the learning curve is so rapid," says Young.
