Caution: Exercise care to prevent purple primer or solvent cement from running back in the valve to the diaphragm or seating area.

Minor cracks holes and surface defects shall be made good with exterior grade water-mixed filler or masonry cement before application of the primer or first coat of paint.

Primer is necessary to penetrate and soften both pipe and fitting socket surfaces in order for the solvent cement to properly bond.
