Many people thought that whatever Mr Bernheimer had paid for Colnaghi, it was too much for a largely denuded dealership.

In 1985, he opened a branch of his Munich dealership near Bond Street, a short walk from the illustrious Colnaghi gallery; 17 years later he owned the place.

“Colnaghi: the History”, published as part of this year’s anniversary celebrations, tells of the personalities and sales that contributed to its formidable reputation.
