There are two test options available between the 15th and 18th weeks to screen for chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects such as Down's syndrome and spina bifida.
"This screening method has the potential to improve birth rates, minimise the incidence of miscarriage and birth defects caused by chromosomal irregularity," Fishel said.
Although the carriers of chromosomal balanced translocation have normal phenotypes they would lead to infertility, abortion of fetus, malformation of fetus and congenital defects after born.
