The tricorder also opens up the upgrade menu, where your phaser can be upgraded (thus tempting you back to the canonical Starfleet weapon rather than alternate bangsticks) and other benefits such as sound suppression (for stealth) improved hacking, increased damage and healing can be added to your character.
