The Chang'e-2, named after a Chinese goddess, forms part of a space programme which China hopes will lead to its first unmanned landing on the Moon in 2013.

The bolt did not cause serious damage and Apollo 12 went on to make a successful, pinpoint landing on the moon near an old unmanned Surveyor probe.

This unmanned Soviet probe became the first to make a controlled landing on the lunar surface.
