The data for the research was mainly obtained through three instruments — questionnaires, vocabulary tests and think-aloud procedures.

Some of the tests that have been used are word fluency, use of grammar, spelling, reading, ability to understand, extend of vocabulary.

The BEC exam tests one's specialized vocabulary needed to draft official business letters, as well as spoken language for telephone communications.
