In Windows 3.0 you could change the background to display a pattern or bitmap image. The new Windows Paintbrush supported BMP and PCX files.

Windows selects the image it needs to use, based on the user's display Settings.

While OS X does a pretty good job evaluating image profiles, Windows 7 works for some image formats, older versions of Windows do not evaluate colour profiles.
