I had another purpose for rewriting besides improving the code and the data structure design, however. That was to evolve it into something I understood completely.

That nexus unfolds in a series of steps that build on one another and must be separately understood (see diagram, below).

And I put my money where my mouth was because I went to war, but I understood pretty quickly that this was another place, another culture, and we would never fit in there.
