There is an easy trick you can use to add plain text to a slide: simply add the text as a transparent text caption.

Transparent to the application: applications using the RAID as a single device. My text editor doesn't care that the file it is saving or loading is split across many disks.

You don't have to use XML as your back end, but an XML document is just a text file and so it is fully transparent and readable in small quantities.
