Why could traditional belief pass from generation to generation?

The traditional belief that garlic has prophylactic properties is probably wrong. The reverse may in fact be true.

But according to a new study co-authored by Psychology Professor Daniel T. Gilbert, that traditional belief may not be entirely true.
