A preliminary study of a shoal of ten flesh-and-blood sticklebacks shows that they do indeed mingle with therobot.

But the sticklebacks in noisy tanks spent more time attacking what's not for dinner, like bits of algae.

Kevin Laland of st Andrews University, who also took part in the study, said: "Nine-spined sticklebacks may be the geniuses of the fish world."
