If a stable column of mud has been set up in the well, keeping the oil at bay through its sheer weight, the next step would be to set cement in the well and seal it off permanently.

"We now have a high volume process for manufacturing sodium fill valves," said Schaefer. "We drill the holes, fill them with sodium and seal them all in one step."

The last step is to hold the above materials to seal a new seal.
