Physicists have succeeded in creating analogs of magnetic monopoles, however, in exotic materials known as "spin ice."

Since that pulls mass closer to the planet's spin axis, it causes the planet to rotate faster - just as an ice skater spins faster when she pulls her arms towards her body.

The scenario is similar to that of a figure skaterdrawing her arms inward during a spin to turn faster on the ice.
