Congenital rubella syndrome happens when a mother is infected with rubella during pregnancy and her baby is born with serious birth defects.

This is necessary because if a woman contracts rubella during pregnancy, her child may be born with congenital defects such as blindness, deafness or heart disease.

If a woman has certain infections during pregnancy, such as rubella or chickenpox, the baby may develop a cataract before birth.
