It provides a direct link between Sha Tin and West Kowloon. It also provides additional road capacity to cope with the increasing traffic in the Lion Rock, Tate's Cairn and Shing Mun Tunnels.

A new pedestrian subway will be built at the southern side of the station, linking it with the existing subway at the junction of Che Kung Mui Road and Sha tin Tau Road.
