Seismometers listen out not just for earthquakes but also for illicit nuclear explosions.

In the past the seismometers required to do so have not been robust enough to survive such brutal conditions.

In response, the local meteorological bureau has strengthened its earthquake-monitoring efforts by installing underwater seismometers.
