The SPOT-Light test can measure how many HER2 genes are present in a sample of breast tumor; the more genes there are, the more likely the tumor will respond to treatment with Herceptin.

The brighter the spot, the more active that gene is in the tissue sample tested.

Patterns are hard to spot because even when researchers use a large sample size, only a much smaller number of people will get cancer.
