Fixing damaged knees is tricky because the form of cartilage found in the joints does not easily regenerate and in some cases total joint replacement is the only option.

The four-country replacement project has strong Latvian support, but Poland is lukewarm and Estonia is considering a small nuclear-power plant of its own if the joint one falls through.

Joint replacement is not inevitable once arthritis sets in.
