They use a system of video cameras, radar sensors and laser range-finders to detect other vehicles, while following a pre-set route mapped out by drivers in ordinary cars.

Dr Davison, however, wants to replace the range finders, which are expensive and fiddly, with a digital camera, which is small, cheap and well understood.

The robots use laser range finders and ultra-wideband radio to determine distance to obstacles.
