If all the UK's nominations are accepted by the European commission the total protected area would more than double to cover more than 4% of the national seas.

One of the most successful programs so far is taking place in what experts say is the single largest protected area in mainland Southeast Asia.

Also included in the protected area are thousands of rock paintings left behind by the SAN people, who lived in the Drakensberg area for more than 4,000 years.
