This paper classifies elliptic utterances in two groups: non-idiomatic and idiomatic.

One enduring belief about the arbitrariness of English idioms is that they are non componential because their idiomatic meanings are not deducible from the meanings of their individual parts.

Non-idiomatic elliptic utterances refer to the non-schema-based ones which occur in a certain context spontaneously and exist for only a short period of time.
