According to the analysis of data of the catalyst and solid particle in the oil mud for the catalytic cracker, the reasons of catalyst loss from different angles is analyzed in this paper.

As muddy sediments are pressed together, the gas and small droplets of oil may be squeezed out of the mud and may move into sandy layers nearby.

This "top" is meant to get enough mud into the well to stop the flow of oil (see illustration below).
