Dr Odent said: "The ideal birth environment involves no men in general."

Mrs Newburn said she did not agree with Dr Odent that men's presence was always unhelpful.

"When a woman gives birth she needs to lose herself in the primitive or limbic part of her brain," Dr Odent said.
