Mouse drivers (especially USB mouse drivers) can be atrociously temperamental beasts, and changing a driver does not always result in added functionality.
For the record, I typically go with whatever the installer chooses for mouse type unless you're absolutely sure about which driver underlies the choices presented.

Getting it working is pretty straightforward. Pop in the driver disc and after a minute or so, you're prompted to toggle on the mouse and press the blue "connect" button.
