It is difficult to see how the theory applies to the plate between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the ridge in the Indian Ocean.

As the new crust cools, it sinks under its own weight-a process called subsidence-so the seafloor should be deeper the farther it is from a mid-ocean ridge.

The result: underwater mountains and hills all along the axis of the mid-ocean ridge.
