Microsoft famously backed the rival high-definition disc format, HD-DVD, and offered users the chance to buy an HD-DVD drive as an add-on for their Xbox 360.

The Japanese electronics maker had backed another high-definition video format, the HD-DVD, but seceded defeat last year, saying it will give up making or developing HD-DVD products.

But so far, sales of such discs have been minuscule-largely because of a war between two formats, HD DVD and Blu-ray.
