- 前端处理器：前端处理器（FEP）或通信处理器是一种小型计算机，它与主机计算机连接多个网络，如SNA，或连接多个外围设备，如终端、磁盘单元、打印机和磁带单元。数据通过高速并行接口在主机计算机和前端处理器之间传输。前端处理器使用较慢的串行接口与外围设备通信，通常也通过通信网络进行通信。其目的是从主机计算机中卸载管理外围设备、传输和接收消息、数据包的组装和拆卸、错误检测和错误纠正的工作。IBM 3705通信控制器和Burroughs数据通信处理器是两个例子。
