Architect and engineer FilippoBrunelleschi won the right to complete the dome by saying that he wouldn't need any internal scaffolding, which was unbelievable in that age (15th century).
The building was started in the thirteenth century but the construction of its dome (known locally as il Duomo) was not completed until the fifteenth, overseen by the architect FilippoBrunelleschi.
