When those same fish were placed in experimental reefs near the Great Barrier reef, they disregarded safety, straying from the protective coral.

This has worked in several places in the tropics, notably the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, where fish populations in protected zones have doubled in five years.

Each fish that had been spawned in the normal water consistently preferred to turn either right or left every time it reached the barrier, a sign of "handedness."
