The notion that the subjective rather than the objective case should be used after ‘to be’ is based partly on logic — the references of the grammatical subject and the complement are the same — and partly on the grammar of languages such as Latin, which are more highly inflected than English, but not on actual English usage. Him, me, them, and us are used similarly, e.g. It's them on the phone again; It's us who will have to pay for it.
