Interrogative used X to?, e.g. Used he to smoke? (2) Negative did not/ didn't use to, e.g. He didn't use to smoke. Interrogative did X use to?, e.g. Did he use to smoke? Note the correct spellings of the abbreviated negative forms, usedn't to, didn't use to. Usen't to and didn't used to are incorrect. All the forms given at (1) and (2) are acceptable but those at (1) are more formal.
