Usage 用法说明
Many people use the phrase beg the question in the disputed sense (sense 2 above). It originally meant, and still means, ‘to assume the truth of the thing that is to be proved’, e.g. By devoting such a large part of the budget for the fight against drug addiction to education, we are begging the question of its significance in the battle against drugs, i.e. we are assuming that through education we can radically reduce drug-taking. Over the years beg the question has been misunderstood and another meaning has arisen, ‘to raise the question’, or ‘invite the obvious question’, and this is now the more common use of the phrase, e.g. Most people continue to live in cities, which begs the question as to whether city life or country life is more desirable. This use has been extended even further in phrases such as The question that still needs to be begged is.... 许多人用 beg the question 这个短语的异议释义(上述释义 2) 。其本意是,现在仍然是“以要证明的事情的真相为先决条件”,如 By devoting such a large part of the budget for the fight against drug addiction to education, we are begging the question of its significance in the battle against drugs (在教育界投入这么多预算与吸毒进行斗争,我们对其在抗击毒品斗争中的意义为先决条件)。即:我们假定可以通过教育大大地减少吸毒。多年来 beg the question 的意思被误解了,而“提出问题”、“请别人提出明显的问题”的用法油然而生,且已成为当今较普遍的用法。如 Most people continue to live in cities, which begs the question as to whether city life or country life is more desirable (许多人接连不断地生活在城市里,这就提出了一个问题,是城市生活还是农村生活更令人称心如意)。这种用法甚至在有的短语中得到更进一步的发挥,如 The question that still needs to be begged is... (仍然需要提出的问题是 …)
