inept/iˈnept/adj. 1a clumsy, unskilful 笨拙的,不熟练的 b absurd, silly 荒唐可笑的,傻的 2 out of place; inappropriate 不相称的,不合适的 □ ineptitude n.□ ineptly adv.□ ineptness n.[Latin ineptus (as IN-1, APT)]■ Usage 用法说明 Inept and inapt are easily confused because they have virtually the same meanings and are closely related etymologically. However, inept is a far commoner word than inapt and is usually used in sense 1a ‘clumsy, unskilful’. Inapt is more often used to mean ‘unsuitable, inappropriate’. This difference is illustrated by the example His after-dinner speech was both inept and inapt, i.e. it was both clumsy and inappropriate. His after-dinner speech was both inept and inapt |
