(1890–1939), Canadian surgeon. He joined the Communist Party in 1935 and served in the Spanish Civil War against the Fascists, organizing the first mobile blood-transfusion service. Bethune then joined the Chinese army in their war against Japan as a surgeon, becoming a hero in the People's Republic; he died while in China.
