(circa 1610–72), Dutch administrator in North America. Appointed colonial governor of New Netherland (now New York and New Jersey) in 1647, he served until the colony was captured by English forces in 1664. In 1655, he expanded the colony by taking over New Sweden in the Delaware River area.
