Origin

1950s; earliest use found in Physica. From the initial letters of the names of John Bardeen, Leon N. Cooper (b. 1930), and John Robert Schrieffer (b. 1931), U.S. physicists, who described the theory in 1957 (Physical Rev. 108 1175).
