(1908–93), US Supreme Court associate justice 1967–91. The first black justice appointed to the US Supreme Court, he had previously won most of the cases he argued before the Court, including the landmark civil rights case Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. Known as a champion of individual rights and affirmative action, he had been the NAACP's chief counsel 1938–61.
