A river of southern Europe, which rises in the Rila Mountains of south-western Bulgaria and flows 480 km (300 miles) south to the Aegean Sea. It forms the border between Bulgaria and Greece and that between Greece and Turkey. Its ancient name is the Hebros or Hebrus.
