An industrial city in north-western Armenia, close to the border with Turkey; population 147,000 (est. 2008). Founded as a fortress in 1837, the city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1926 and again in 1988. It was formerly called Aleksandropol (1840–1924) and Leninakan (1924–91).
