(born 1952), Russian statesman; president of the Russian Federation 2000–8 and since 2012; prime minister 2008–2012. A former KGB officer, he was appointed head of the Security Council and then prime minister by Boris Yeltsin; he became acting president on Yeltsin's resignation December 31, 1999, and was elected president in 2000.
