  • When the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott wrote in his journal in 1826, ‘Sent off proofs and copy galore before breakfast’, he was using a word that originated in Ireland. Galore ‘in abundance’ comes from Irish go leor, which means ‘to sufficiency, enough’.
