  • A form of defective colour vision in which perception of light at the red end of the spectrum is reduced, resulting in a form of anomalous trichromatism that requires an excess of red in colour matching; partial protanopia.

Origin

1930s; earliest use found in Stewart Duke-Elder (1898–1978), ophthalmic surgeon. From protanomal- + -y, after anomaly. Compare earlier protanomal, and also deuteranomaly.
