  • Any of several relatively small vultures now or formerly included in the genus Neophron, specifically the Egyptian vulture, N. percnopterus (now the only member of the genus). Also (in form Neophron): the genus itself.

Origin

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Prideaux John Selby (1788–1867), naturalist. From scientific Latin Neophron, genus name from Hellenistic Greek Νεόϕρων, the name of a man transformed into a vulture in the Metamorphoses of Antoninus Liberalis (probably 2nd cent. a.d.), use as name of ancient Greek νεόϕρων childish in spirit from νεο- + ϕρήν mind.
