Late 19th century; earliest use found in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. From post-classical Latin procerus designating a muscle of the nose from classical Latin prōcērus long, stretched out from prō- + the stem of crēscere to grow + -rus, suffix forming adjectives.
