Early 17th century; earliest use found in Ben Jonson (?1573–1637), poet and playwright. From classical Latin pēgma framework, movable stage or scaffold in a theatre from Hellenistic Greek πῆγμα, already in ancient Greek denoting a substance which causes curdling from πηγνύναι to fix, fasten + -μα.
